Watch out! Thieves with knives are after your coat
The trick of the thieves is to approach passers-by and cut their coats with blades or sharp knives in Budapest city center. After several victims have reported the incident, the police are investigating the case.
One of the victims, Barbi, first shared her story on her social media page. The young girl was walking at Deák Ferenc Square in the afternoon when someone approached her from behind. A man started to talk to her in English, saying that her coat had been torn. When the girl reflexively looked behind to check it,
she realized that there was a deep cut on the coat and the filling was falling out of the textile.
Then suddenly a scruffy woman appeared next to the girl saying that her coat should be thrown away as it could not be repaired. Barbi was in shock and immediately replied that she would fix it, just leave her alone. The woman left angrily.
The young girl suspects that the woman wanted to get the coat. After the incident, she posted the case on her Facebook page,
highlighting that she could have been seriously injured when they cut her coat with a blade or a sharp knife.
“Luckily, I’m fine, and I hope the story reaches as many people as possible in case it happens again” – commented Barbi.
After the case of the young girl, some Hungarians indicated that the method was not new and that they had been subjected to similar attacks in recent years. There was a victim who was approached on tram 4-6 and his expensive designer coat was destroyed with a similar method.
The young girl revealed to the Hungarian news portal Metropol that her coat had irreversible damage and that the police contacted her after the incident. The Hungarian authorities have been paying close attention to the safety of the area since the double murder committed by a gang at Deák Square.
Since the incident, another victim has reported on the 26th November that someone in a downtown café had damaged her jacket. In both two cases, proceedings have been initiated against an unknown assailant.

Hello, my wife had her coat cut with a knife whilst we were visiting the Christmas market next to the Fashion Street on Saturday 11th Dec 2021. Whilst no one approached her directly and she did not see who cut the coat, the incident is very similar to the one reported and I can assume that the person must have realised that my wife was not alone as I walked over to join her and left.
